I was able to catch Lauren Greenfield's latest doc at Sundance (and tried to get it for the festival - indeed, it was originally confirmed, but later rescinded). It's a great piece of schadenfreude. What made the film work for me is that despite the Siegels' complete detachment from reality, you actually feel something for them from time to time (thus there is a slight hint of guilt in watching their empire crumble - but not too much).
In the current political climate and election year, it will play very differently depending on who is watching it. But politics aside, it's a very entertaining documentary - even as you are infuriated, you can't help but have a chuckle.
Queen of Versailles opens at the Belcourt tomorrow.
