In the past two days, we've lost a great filmmaker and a great writer. Chris Marker's La Jette is a true classic. It inspired much cinema that followed and was adapted in Hollywood into the well-made (although quite different stylistically) 12 Monkeys. His complete filmography is impressive. Thanks to the Criterion Collection, you can actually check it out if you are unfamiliar with his work.
Gore Vidal's writing is some of the most vital of the past century, but his work in film is sometimes lesser known. He's been a writer (Suddenly, Last Summer; The Best Man; and did you know...Caligula?) and actor (Bob Roberts; Gattaca; Igby Goes Down) and of course his works have been adapted for the screen. We seem to be on a stretch of losing the greats. But at least they leave behind a legacy for us to share with one another and generations to come.
