The Aurochs are Here

If you live in Nashville, today is like a holiday (for movie lovers). The most fascinating, moving motion picture of the year is finally here. Beasts of the Southern Wild opens at the Belcourt today. Buy tickets NOW. With the success the Belcourt has had with Moonrise Kingdom, I suspect Beasts tickets are soon to be rare commodities.

Trying to explain the film is the definition of folly. The best thing I could come up with is this: "It's the best Southern Gothic, father/daughter, global warming, science fiction, monster weepie I've ever seen."

Youngster Quvenzhane Wallis delivers what is easily the most remarkable child performance I've seen since 1994's Ponette. If Fox Searchlight plays their cards right, they could have the youngest Best Actress nominee in history on their hands.

Simply put. Go see it. You will thank yourself for the decision. And you'll thank the movie gods  that there are still people out there as creative as Benh Zeitlin and his crew.

Oh, and I'll be there for the 3:20 show tomorrow to see it again. And will probably be back for at least a third visit before the film's likely long run comes to an end.
